Football Game at Forrest High School

We arrived at Forrest safely thanks to our WONDERFUL bus drivers, Bobby Jo, Ray, Andrea and Donna. All except for one the last one listed are parents of our guard students. I am telling you this so you can see there are many ways our parents are involved in volunteering to help the band. The students marched proudly into the stadium and filed into the stands. The trailer was unloaded and instruments arranged for the pit and drum line. Everyone settled into place to get ready for the first game of the year. Just as we all settled in we noticed across the field a line of ominous looking clouds. A lot of “that is not coming here, it’s going to go around” was being said. We decided we better have a plan of action just in case that line of clouds came our way. It was only a mater of minutes before we heard someone yell “here it comes”. The rain came down and most of us scrambled around covering instruments, getting the kids under the stands, grabbing anything we could to find a place under the stands for a moment of dry shelter. The rain didn’t last very long, just long enough to get everyone soaked to the bone. It stopped raining just in time for the students to warm up their instruments and get ready for the half time show.

All things considered the first performance was great. The students were able to see all their hard work come together for the first show. The freshmen were able to see what it is like to perform and now they all know what they have to work on to perfect their performance, returning students included. The butterflies in their stomachs can be put to rest for another week.

As soon as the students came off the field it was obvious that another line of rain was headed our way. The parents and students quickly gathered all of our belongings, packed the trailer and loaded the buses. We came, performed and left.

Now we focus on next week’s performance. Thank you to all of the parents that volunteered for this game. We absolutely cannot do this without you! The first game is always the hardest. Thank you to all of the parents that came to the game to support the students in the stands as well. They need to hear your cheers and praise. It really is what keeps them motivated to do a good job.

The next game is supposed to be a home game against Fletcher High School. We will know more later on in the week if this will happen or not. The electricity for the field is hopefully going to be restored by Tuesday of this week but that is up to JEA. I will send out an update later in the week concerning the next game. Your kids will also know where the game will be and an itinerary will go home with each of them concerning the next game and performance. Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative for this game.
